The Maryland Daily Record recently ran an article interviewing one of Bowie and Jensen’s clients, David Noel of Workforce Tactix.

Workforce Tactix, Inc. is an independent insurance brokerage and consulting firm in Sparks, Maryland.

A recent Daily Record article interviewed David Noel, president of the Maryland Association of Health Underwriters and vice president of sales at Workforce Tactix Inc., about how Obamacare has impacted insurance brokerage firms.

As many know, the state of Maryland chose to implement Obamacare through the Maryland Health Insurance Exchange through an open enrollment period that ended on Monday, March 31, 2014.  Among Maryland consumers, the botched open enrollment site (known as the Maryland Health Connection) created headaches and frustration.  But more importantly, it created the relief that comes with secured coverage.

For insurance brokers, it was a different story. The turbulent open enrollment meant their jobs were secure. The malfunctioning site ended up being a blessing, leading to several brokers acquiring more business than expected since the website launched in October.

Brokerage firms may have dodged a bullet with individual plans, but more challenges are down the road. Now, brokerage firms await the implementation of “SHOP”.  The SHOP (Small Business Options Program) exchange will provide enrollment for small business group plans.  If SHOP does poorly on its scheduled start date in 2015, then brokers will do well according to David Noel.

However, as all the kinks are getting worked out of the Maryland Health Connection, the launch of SHOP could potentially go much more smoothly.
