Finding BRAC Contracts and Marketing to the Federal Government
Maryland will experience tremendous growth over the next few years because of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). This is great news for Maryland’s construction industry.
In the Baltimore metro area several military installations will experience significant growth due to BRAC, including Ft. Meade in Anne Arundel County, Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County, and National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.
But the Federal Government contracting world changes quickly, so how can construction companies stay on top of the latest BRAC construction news and turn that news into new contracts? Here are some helpful steps:
Step 1: Begin by searching each week for Federal Government opportunities.
Start each week by searching for opportunities on FedBizOpps.gov. Most BRAC-related contracting opportunities are posted on FedBizOpps in a “full and open” competition.
Step 2: Get Regular Updates on Defense Contract Announcements
At Defense Link News contracts valued at $5 million or more are announced each business day at 5 p.m. Contract announcements issued within the past 30 days are listed by day and you can click on a link to each day’s announcements. Older contract announcements are available from the contract archive page. Contract announcements are also available by e-mail subscription. You can also go to DOD News for more information and for links to other news items or visit http://www.defense.gov/contracts/
Get individual base news from each BRAC site, for example you can sign up for Ft Meade BRAC news at http://www.disa.mil/brac/news/

Step 3: Market, Market, Market
What's the best way to get these government contracts? The Government Service Agency, the largest government supply clearing house, has put together helpful guides on how to market to government agencies. The guides answer a number of BRAC related questions, including “What is a successful marketing strategy?” and “How can companies partner with GSA in order to be a better provider to Federal customers and how can GSA help?”. Here are some links to GSA marketing resources, or visit the GSA site at www.gsa.gov.
